NB: In the 'comments' column, occasional reference is made to "Historia Naturalis Brasiliae" by Pisonis and Marcgravi (1648), which contains an appendix on *De Chilensium Lingua, et Vocabularium dictionum Chilensium* (DCL). This appears to be a copy of the same original manuscript used to compile Barlaei's "Vocabula". On the one hand, DCL is briefer, but on the other, it shows occasional distinct spellings that are clearly the result of a different interpretation of the original handwritten document.

ENG: milk

Lac. Leche ilu milk N root ilu milk Valdivia, Febrés and Havestadt qualify this as mother's milk, as opposed to a more generic 'lichi'. Febres gives 'lichitun' as 'to milk', while human breastfeeding is given as 'moyulcan' by Valdivia. It is likely that, at least for more northern dialects a distinction between human and animal milk was preerved in the lexicon, the latter probably having entered the Mapuche diet only after European contact, hence taking a Spanish word 'leche'. It is possible that in the variety described here, the Mapuche word was extended to animal milk as well as human. 'ilu' is not attested later.
